Camp Sites & Facilities

For a moment, this site will be Camp Across Virginia and Kentucky.  Breaks Interstate Park is only one of two parks in the nation that crosses state lines, thus making it an “interstate” park.  If you visit their website, you will notice that it looks and navigates completely differently than the other Department of Conservation and Recreation web sites.  Currently, they do not have a park map (PDF) online.  Although located in a remote area between the state, the park offers and outstanding assortment of activities.  Even the weeklong visitor would be hard pressed to enjoy all of the offerings.

First of all, the park offers a variety of camping options from primitive tent sites to RV sites with 50 amp electric, water and waste hook-ups.  There is Laurel Lake with canoe, kayak and paddle boat rentals.  Visitors may also fish, wade or tube in the lake.  If the lake isn’t wet enough, there is a pool facility located near the lake that has a concession stand and bathhouse.  The Rhododendron Restaurant is also located within the grounds for anyone needing a break from cooking at the campsite.

Recreation

Breaks Interstate has made an agreement with Willowbrook Country Club to allow campers a fantastic rate for a round of golf.  The Russell Fork River runs through the base of Breaks Gorge.  During the month of October, this becomes some of the most challenging whitewater rafting in the U.S., as water is released from the Flannagan Dam and Reservoir.  Visitors should definitely contact a guide if they are interested in planning a trip down the river at this time.

Local Attractions

There is a working gristmill located in the park that visitors can tour and experience how difficult the simple task of making bread used to be.  Outside of park there are a number of local museums and destinations including the Ralph Stanley Museum and Traditional Mountain Music Center.  Pikeville, KY is also home of the Eastern Kentucky Exposition Center and the U.S. 23 Country Music Scenic Byway winds it’s way through the area.

Additional Information

The term “breaks” refers to an opening in the Pine Mountain range that Daniel Boone utilized on his travels to the west.  There are many references to this historic trail throughout the region.  The nearest sure bet for shopping is in the direction of Grundy, VA., or Pikeville, KY.  Campers should plan on stocking up before heading into the park to keep distracting side trips at a minimum.  Buchanan General Hospital is also located in Grundy.
