Camp Sites & Facilities

Nestled in the foothills northwest of Martinsville, Va., is Fairy Stone State Park.   Fairy Stone is one of the original six state parks incorporated by Virginia in 1936 and constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corp.   Several of the original structures built by the CCC are still in the park – including some of the rustic rental cabins.  The park is approximately 4,500 acres in size including a 168 acre lake that has a large beach area and pool critters for the kids to play on.  There are 50 electric/water campsites that will accommodate an RV up to 30 feet in length.  There are also 6 group tent locations.  Some of the RV sites have a sand-based tent pad, some do not.  There are bathhouses located in each of the camping loops as well as at the swimming area.

Recreation

Fairy Stone Park is named after the legend of the Fairy Stone (and the availability of staurolite, a mineral compound that forms at right angles making a cross shape).  The legend states that long ago fairies roamed the area.  When an elf informed them that Jesus Christ had died, the fairies tears fell and crystallized in the shape of crosses.  If you have a mind to hunt for the stones, make sure to get directions first.  The park has a boat launch on the shore opposite the swimming area, however gas motors are not allowed.  There are several trails in the park and an equestrian camp area conveniently located near the feeder road into the park.

Local Attractions

Philpott Reservoir, a Corps of Engineer site, is located a short drive from Fairy Stone.  Boats with gas motors are allowed on the lake that is known for excellent fishing.  The legendary NASCAR Martinsville Speedway is also a short drive away in Martinsville.  The Blue Ridge Parkway, as it runs south of Roanoke is located west of Fairy Stone.  Martinsville is also the home for the Virginia Museum of Natural History, an outstanding facility associated with Smithsonian Institution.

Additional Information

Access to Fairy Stone has an advantage as it is located somewhat in the center of a square formed by I-81, I-77, Rte. 29 and Rte. 58.  Added to the fact that it is close to the Blue Ridge Parkway and you have a wonderful state park located near many other exciting destinations.   Be wary of GPS directions, however, be absolutely certain to use the bypass around Martinsville and Danville.  Shopping is available a few miles to the east in Collinsville or Martinsville and the nearest hospital complex is Martinsville Memorial Hospital.
