Camp Sites & Facilities

Hungry Mother State Park was one of the original six state parks created by Virginia in 1936.  As things go, one of the unique features of the park is that it includes a campground with electric, water and sewer hook-ups.  This area, known as Camp Burson, is located a small drive away from the park entrance and has it’s own check-in center.  Camp Burson has 30 full hook-up sites and 22 sites with electric/water only.  The main part of Hungry Mother has 31 electric/water sites and 11 standard tent sites.  The camping areas are stretched apart, so a little exploration is handy when looking for the right site for your needs.

Hungry Mother Lake has a swimming area that includes a concession stand and bathhouse.  The facility also has numerous camping cabins, several lodges and a large conference center.  There is a restaurant called “The Restaurant,” that is open Wednesday through Sunday during peak season.  Hungry Mother Lake has ample fishing spots and canoes, kayaks and electric jon boats are available to rent.  Gas engines are not allowed on the lake.

Recreation

This state park offers many amenities for recreation.  There are trails that wind their way around the lake and several interesting overlooks.  There are basketball and tennis courts and an amphitheater located on an island on the lake is a popular destination for concerts and weddings.

Local Attractions

There are an amazing assortment of activities available around the park and Marion, Va.  The region is considered the “heart” of Appalachian folk music and there are a number of concerts and festivals that celebrate this rich heritage.  Campers may also wish to try the Wolf Creek Indian village or the Museum of Middle Appalachians.  Grayson Highlands State Park is located nearby, as is Mt. Rogers, the tallest peak in Virginia.

Additional Information

Hungry Mother is located just north of I-81.  It is nestled in a pocket of the Jefferson National Forest, so is not quite as steep as some of the surrounding parks.   While the park offers several visitor centers with supplies, campers may want to stock up in Marion before venturing into the park.  Remember to call in a reservation if you are looking for a site with full hookup.  The nearest medical facility is Smyth County Community Hospital.
